Moodboard making.

I am currently getting images off the internet and using my own taken images to create a mood board of ideas. The images in the moodboard will be relevant to my music video wants and ideas. Everything included in the moodboard may not be included in my video but they will contribute to my decisions later on.

Audience feedback sheet completed.

I have collected the information from the audience feedback sheet I sent out and organized the results in tables for each category. This audience feedback is useful but even more so when it comes down to making my final decisions later on as when i have no clue what to use i can refer back to my audience to make those all important decisions to make my music video exactly what the audience wants to see.

Audience feedback sheet.

I have sent out the first page from the 'Ideas from my music video' presentation to gather audience feedback. I have decided to delete the characters section as i know i want to use 1 male character and 1 female character in my music video. I have still kept the other three selections which are props, location/settings and costumes. I have asked the audience to circle just one of the words for each section on the page because then i can get more precise answers from my audience. The reason for sending out this feedback sheet is to gather information on what the audience want to see in my music video as i am catering for them.

Lyrics questionnaire.

I have sent out this questionnaire to my audience to get feedback on what they think the meaning is behind the unusual lyrics of the track 42 by Coldplay. I have given them each of the lines in the lyrics and asked them to write what they think the meaning behind the lyrics are. I decided not to give the audience tick boxes on the questionnaire because they may influence their decision and i want their answers to be personal to them.

Ideas for my music video.

I have gathered my own personal ideas which I would like to feature in my music video. In the presentation i have included ideas on props, location/settings, characters and costumes. However, these are my own personal ideas and i would like to include my audiences opinions and ideas to because this video is for them to watch and enjoy so it would be sensible to include what they want to see in my music video. I will be sending a questionnaire out to my audience to get feedback on what they think should be in my music video.

Analysis of lyrics.

I have decided to analyse the lyrics of 42 by Coldplay to possibly get more ideas from really thinking about the meaning behind the words in this track. This is my own personal review of the lyrics so I will send the lyrics out to my audience to get their feedback and their favorite ideas which I could gather and possibly use in my music video.

Shot list.

This shot list is to keep record of the various shots i use in my music video. It will help me keep track of which shots I have used too much of and which shots I haven't used as often as I could of done. It also reminds me of all the different shots I can use in my music video so I will have a wide range of various shots in my music video. Part of the marking criteria is to 'use a variety of camera techniques - angles, movements etc' and my personal shot list will make sure I stick to this section of the marking criteria.

Research into brand identity.

I have researched Duffy and Coldplay for my brand identity research and made analysis on 3 of their texts including the links between their website, digi pack and music video.

Research deadline.

The deadline for my preliminary research tasks is the 5th October 2011. These tasks include:

- Research into existing texts, videos and established music video theories.

- Research into brand identity - looking at how an artist (or record label at least) create cohesion between three texts - their videos, websites and album designs.

Research - Digi pack analysis.

I have made this presentation to analyse well known, successful music artists digi packs including, 'Coldplay', 'Duffy', 'MGMT', 'Muse' and 'Damien Rice'. These digi packs have made me realize how much of a story the cover can tell before we get to listen to the album.

Research plan.

I have decided to do some research on digi packs, music videos and websites to get ideas for my project. I am going to analyse a few artists digi pack, music video and website to see what links them all together and if it is easy to work out the genre of the music from the appearance of the 3 texts.

Marking criteria.

The marking criteria for my music video are:
  • ability to construct and hold a steady shot when necessary
  • use a variety of camera techniques - angles, movements etc
  • shoot material appropriate to task and purpose
  • manipulate mise-en-scene - setting, lighting, props, costume, make up etc
  • edit to create meaning and effect
  • combine sound and vision - lip synching, editing to pace of track etc
I have to think about all these points when constructing my music video and make sure i have included them in detail to receive a high mark for my music video.

Spider diagram ideas.

I am now using my imagination and the images i have captured in my mind from listening to '42' to generate ideas which i can use in my music video. I am thinking of realistic locations, props, characters and costumes i can use to make the video look amazing. I have decided to create a spider diagram for a clearer way to view all my ideas. I am constructing a spider diagram of possible props, locations, characters and costumes. This spider diagram will be used to send out to my audience to retrieve audience feedback.

Chosen song.

I have now chosen for definite my song that i am going to make a music video for. When i first heard this song i could imagine what the video would look like and over the past couple of weeks i have researched other songs to see if i could find one better, but no other song has brought out my imagination as well as this one has done.

The song i have chosen is "42" by "Coldplay".

'42' is from the 'Coldplay' album 'Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends' and was first released in 2008. Originally '42' was titled "Thought You Might be a Ghost" in early album sessions for Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends. Later it was renamed "42" and thought to be a reference to the answer of life, the universe and everything from the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Blog Background.

I have decided to change the background of my blog to reflect the mood and tone of my song and video. The background image is of roses which symbolize love which is one of the emotions i am looking to portray through my music video. Also, the colors of the image are red and black which symbolize love, hurt and death which are other key emotions that i am looking to portray in my music video, so this rose background is perfect for setting the mood of my blog and will get my viewers imagination working.

Laura Mulvey.

Laura Mulvey is a British feminist film theorist. Her theory is that everyone is viewed through a male perspective. This is why women are dressed in provocotive clothing escpecially in music videos as they think everyone is judging the women through male eyes. The women who watch the other women in the music videos begin to think that the scimpy outfits look good, sexy and what men really want. Women want to be them and men want to be with them. Laura Mulvey doesn't agree with this way of portraying women as it makes women seem like objects instead of people. Even female artists music videos have themselves dressed in provocative clothing and heavy make up as they think this is what everyone (men and women) want to see, but in reality this is not always the case.

Finding a song.

I am in the process of picking the perfect song for me to make a video for. I am making my choice upon the lyrics and the music of the song to see if they will fit into the narrative video i want to make. The idea of the video i already has is quite dark and on the subject of love and death so i'm searching for songs which may fit with the video. I will keep my options open incase i don't find the right song to still create a great video.

Goodwin's music video analysis.

In our lesson we learnt about Andrew Goodwin's theory of six.

Andrew Goodwin writing in 'Dancing in the Distarction factory' (Routledge 1992).

1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics
For example, a dance routine in a boy/girl band, a stage performance for a metal video.
http://www.muzu.tv/gb/thesaturdays/all-fired-up-music-video/1088982/ - This is the girl band 'The Saturdays' with their "All fired up" music video. They have a dance routine in their video, which proves this theory of a girl band routine.

2. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals
Either illustative, amplifying or contradicting.
For example, a illustrative video would help convey the meaning of the song, a amplifying video would repeat or exaggurate an effect, movement or phrase from the song, a contradicting video would completely ignore the song.
http://www.muzu.tv/gb/brunomars/the-lazy-song-music-video/930420/ - This musi song "The lazy song" by Bruno Mars emphasizes words of the song by a movement or hand sign, such as telephone is emphasized  by a hand gesture of a telephone.

3. There is a relationship between music and visuals
Either illustrating, amplifying or contradicting.
http://www.muzu.tv/gb/nicolescherzinger/wet-music-video/1069955/ - In this music video "Wet" by Nicole Scherzinger, everything is done to the beat of the music such as dance moves and walking.

4. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work
For example, visually there is Michael Jackson's white shoes and glitter glove, Bono's sunglasses, Lady Gaga's crazy costumes and frequent costume changes. Also poses and dance moves such as Michael Jackson's hand on his crotch thrusting was a recurring dance move throughout his videos.
http://www.muzu.tv/gb/maroon5/moves-like-jagger-music-video/1051598/ - In this music video "Moves like Jagger" by Maroon 5 have a lot of close ups of the band and the singer sings into the camera to make it more personal with the viewers. At 3 minutes 16 seconds of the video when Christina Aguilera starts singing their are multiple close ups and extreme close ups of her singing into camera.

5. There is frequently reference to notion of looking and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body
For example, screens within screens, telescopes, looking directly into the camera (like they know you're watching them). Women in music videos are directed through the males mind which in most cases are dressed in very revealing clothes and are doing sexual dance moves.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EXRtF0bepNs&ob=av2e -   "Stereo hearts" by Gym class heroes have t.v screens within the t.v screen you're looking in to.

6. There is often intertextual reference
For example, reference to films, television programmes and other music videos.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1BkR760o94 - This is "We dance on" by N-dubz with reference from the movie "Street dance 3D".

Music video genres.

In the lesson we talked about the three different types of music genres and how they are represented through the video.
The three music video genres include:

The performance video
This is usually suited to pop and rock music, where the focus is on the performers performing, be it as a group, a ‘solo’ artist or as a dance routine.
This genre of video is the most common, in that they are the easiest to produce and require the least planning.

The narrative video
nThis is suited to most genres of music.
Narratives rarely have anything to do with the subject matter of the song, they are figurative rather than literal version of the song.
n
nIt usually adopts something distinctive or unique – Coldplay’s ‘The Scientist’ told backwards, A-Ha’s ‘Take On Me’ told through moving comic books.

The abstract video
This genre is very detached from the music and/or the lyrics.
nIt usually includes a series of seemingly unconnected images, edited to fit the pace of the music.
nIt also suits most styles of music, particularly the less mainstream types, or the ‘abstract’ music styles.
